In 1999, I championed this virtual safe-deposit box service as something my then-employer (one of the largest banks in the U.S.) should launch. Did a business case for it and everything. The CEO of that bank at that time stated that I was “out of my mind”, and no one would ever want to use such a thing, and to please, please stop wasting their time and mine on “pie in the sky” stuff like this. Yup, kind of funny….
I can’t take credit for coming up with the idea; it had already been discussed quite a bit in banking circles. I thought we should get a jump on everyone else, that’s all.
Sometimes it’s really hard to get business leaders to see where their business needs to go, and to anticipate their customers’ needs, and this was one of those times. I’m pretty persuasive, but that fellow just wasn’t budging.
“No one except technical people that work with computers would ever want to use such a thing”, he stated emphatically. Ahh, good times, good times.
